The Crucified Jew

This painting in mixed acrylic and water color depicts memories I have as a Jewish youth facing his being homosexual. I was raised in a somewhat traditional manner and was the eldest Jewish son to Depression Era parents whose parents had fled persecution in Eastern Europe to live life freely as American Jews. When I realized I was spiritually and erotically attracted to men, I felt myself as if nailed to a cross. But this is not the cross necessarily on which Jesus who was a Jew was crucified. This cross create a circle divided into FOUR, which is the symbol of wholeness. So the agony led to a kind of ecstatic union of personality on which I am still working. This is an image I show with clients who are struggling with the opposites in their life, and is very important in so far as spiritual contradictions are concerned.
